All About Deb Reading and Talking When I was young, I always wrote. I’d read my stories out loud to people to see what they thought and give them away as presents whenever I could. I’d read everything I could as well. Bus notices, traffic signs, billboards, backs of cereal boxes and books. Lots of books. Mum would bring home a new one every week and I was a big fan of the local and school libraries. I also loved being in school plays and performances, either singing or acting. I don’t think I was a very good actor but that didn’t stop me imagining accepting my Academy Award one day. I loved performing and I even loved the nerves I’d get just before I went on stage. I loved talking and was on the debating team until I left school in year 12. We had lots of fun trying to out-argue the other teams. Study and Travel After leaving school I studied for a Diploma of Teaching (Secondary School) and then realised I needed to see the world. For 3 years I travelled from America to the UK to Africa, Europe and parts of Asia. I then came home and drove a car around Australia and saw so many beautiful places in my own country. My favourite place was the African continent, especially the Sahara Desert and my favourite countries were Algeria and Ghana. After all that travel, I felt like studying again so I went to the University of Technology, Sydney and completed a Bachelor of Communications majoring in writing and film, which meant I got to write, read and watch a lot of films. It was excellent! Work I then got a great job in the script department at the Production House, Southern Star, who have made lots of TV shows including Police Rescue, Blue Heelers, Amazing and The Secret Life of Us. After that, I worked in the drama department of Network Ten in Sydney before being given the position of Assistant Producer then Producer/Writer of the children's show, Cheez TV. My main job was coming up with the ideas for the shows and writing the scripts. I’d also find guests, direct the studio and location segments and edit stories together. It was a great job that I did for about 6 years and we got to travel to lots of fun places like New Zealand, New York, England, Tasmania, Queensland, Victoria and the snowfields of Australia. I left that job in December 2001 to write and have been having lots of fun doing that ever since. More About Deb -
